“Laser”
The interesting thing about this setup is, that it's a infrared laser. You can barely see it with your eyes (yes, I know... you shouldn't) but it's very bright for the camera CCD.

Could you please also upload a picture of the beam profile, taken with your digital IXUS? ;-)
Unfurtunately, I cannot remove the lens to directly shine the light on the CCD/CMOS...
There are some tools in the boot of my car - next time we meet I'll help you removing the lens.
